In combination with world renowned scientists from Academia Sinica and Switzerland, the “Advanced Plant Biotechnology Center” (APBC), supported by the special grant of MOE, mobilizes top scientists of National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) to study plant functional genomics and to deploy cutting edge biotechnology for promoting the world-leading roles of NCHU in several fields of important crops, including orchids, rice and high value vegetables and fruits. The special programs of APBC are organized and coordinated by the Academician Shyi-Dong Yeh, National Chair Professor Chang-Hsien Yang and Academician Tuan-Hua David Ho who are world renowned expert in plant biotechnology. The major themes of the programs include: (I) Four subprojects aim at functional genomics and biotechnology of orchids. The whole transcriptome libraries and bioinformation platforms will be established. Also, through technology of gene manipulation, gene silencing, gene editing, and high intelligent virus detection, the characteristics of orchid will be improved to maintain the superiority in world markets. (II) Three subprojects integrate molecular markers and functional genes for developing super rice varieties with the characteristics of high yield, high quality, good flavor and the abilities against biotic or abiotic stresses. (III) Four subprojects on defense genomics of high value vegetables and fruits focus on identification of natural defense genes, and utilization of gene editing and gene manipulation technology to develop defensive crops against infection by fungi and viruses to ensure food production and security. Through the deployment of the innovative APBC, and the integration of outstanding scientists and cutting edge plant biotechnology, NCHU will ensure the pioneer positions in international plant biotechnology, especially in the fields of orchids, rice and high value vegetables and fruits. Also, NCHU will become a world hub of tropical agriculture for innovative industry and elite incubation.
